Chris Gollon was a very sensitive painter of women, and a keen observer of how fashions and behaviours change, as seen in this female figure. We have included this painting in 'Emergence & Transformation - Revisited', since during the pandemic we have all realised the need to keep fit and well, so this uplifting and sensitive image perhaps gives us a positive outlook, since it's one area of our lives we can at least control.
This work was painted at a time when Chris Gollon–already a master of black–was experimenting with the poetic use of a flat matt acrylic black, which if correctly placed, can curiously give the effect of volume, when juxtaposed with fully worked up anatomy. With the use of spray paints, combined with Old Master glazing techniques in the flesh tones, she seems so positive, alive, full of movement and energy.
