The award-winning River & Rowing Museum in Henley-on-Thames invited Chris Gollon to have a solo exhibition in 2001, given he was a river-based artist, with a studio on Platt's Eyot, near Hampton Court.
Impressed by the collection of stuffed and cased fish in the museum's collection, Gollon was inspired to make a triptych to reflect the drama and life beneath the river's surface.
The triptych was co-purchased by the Victoria & Albert Museum and the River & Rowing Museum, and is exhibited as part of the latter's collection, alongside works by Raoul Dufy, Julian Trevelyan, John Piper and Justin Mortimer.
