In 2013, just as he was completing the series of paintings for his national touring exhibition to English cathedrals, Incarnation, Mary & Women from the Bible, Chris Gollon met Yi Yao, the Grammy-nominated Chinese classical accordionist and composer. Gollon and Yao both shared an interest in boundary crossing and in synesthesia (where people with the medical condition see colours when they hear specific musical notes). A collaboration began, without either knowing how or where it would end. It resulted in an extraordinary installation of art and music, a 41ft (12.5m) long painting and a 19-minute classical composition, taking us through human life and the Seven Ages of Man, and entitled And It Came To Pass. Chris would paint a panel, show it to Yi, who would compose a musical score that would help inspire and guide the direction, rhythms and colours of the next panel, and so on and so forth. In 2014, it was premiered very successfully in London for one sell-out night, then transferred to the prestigious Henley Festival.
