This original painting on paper is – as far as is known – the first image in art history of Job’s first wife. Part of Chris Gollon’s national touring exhibition ‘Incarnation, Mary and Women from the Bible’, it featured in BBC TV News footage at Chichester Cathedral in 2015, and the footage was then incorporated into the feature documentary ‘CHRIS GOLLON: Life in Paint’ (85mins), premiered at the Barbican Centre in 2024 and subsequently shown in New York in 2025, and Southwark Cathedral 2026.

Chris Gollon was a very sensitive painter of women, and in this series of works he shed light on women’s experience of the Biblical narrative, sometimes – as here – shedding light on nameless women from the Bible. Job’s first wife was the first woman to question God’s actions, and also her husband’s faith.
