N1 Mirror
A bespoke, commissioned mirror designed for a study in a flat located in Clerkenwell, London. The room is white with dark grey metal framed internal windows and fixtures. A particular feature of the room is a wall faced with white wood slats. This commission was created in close consultation with our client. The mirror was inspired by the work of Donald Judd (1928 – 1994) who used panels with strips in his wall sculptures.
The mirror was made to the client’s specifications, the overall size is 800 x 1000 mm. The tray frame is in pale poplar wood; the sides were stained white and lime waxed. The face of the moulding was painted with graphite, then sets of 10 x 6mm strips were cut. These were treated to match the frame sides and then arranged in a spiral formation on top of the graphite. The interior of the tray frame was also coated in graphite within which floats a 4mm mirror with polished edges.
The mirror has integral split battens on all four sides enabling the mirror to be displayed as either landscape or portrait. The battens are also raised slightly so the entire mirror frame appears to float on the wall.
This is a variation on the strip mirrors and is a good example of how standard designs are open to customisation. It also became the genesis for further mirrors – the N2, and Three Greys on Colours with Purple.
